OET – Occupational English Test

OET, or the Occupational English Test, is a standardized English language test designed for healthcare professionals who wish to work in an English-speaking country or region. The test assesses the language skills of candidates in four areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The test is widely accepted by healthcare regulatory bodies and organizations in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. It is also recognized by many universities and colleges for English language proficiency requirements for healthcare-related courses.

The test is available in multiple test sessions throughout the year, and results are usually available within two to three weeks. OET is a computer-based test, with the speaking and listening sections being done in person with a qualified test assessor.

Curriculum Description

The goal of the OET Group Class is to give students the knowledge and test-taking techniques they need to get best scores. The course will cover material and writing techniques for Listening, Writing, Speaking and Reading. After finishing the course, students should be able to recognize and handle challenging or tough questions as well as comprehend exam structure, scoring methodology, and section-specific test-taking tactics.

What You'll Discover

Each of the four sub-tests is scored separately and the scores are combined to give an overall grade, which ranges from A to E, with A being the highest score.

 

  • Reading: This section tests the candidate’s ability to understand written texts, such as case notes, discharge summaries, and journal articles.

 

  • Writing: This section tests the candidate’s ability to write in a professional and accurate manner, such as in a letter to a patient or a referral letter to a colleague.

 

  • Listening: This section tests the candidate’s ability to understand spoken English in various healthcare settings, such as consultations, ward rounds, and meetings.

 

  • Speaking: This section tests the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in spoken English in a simulated healthcare setting, such as a consultation with a patient or a case presentation with a colleague.

 

OET FOCUS

The OET Reading sub-test is designed to assess the reading skills of healthcare professionals in the English language. The test takes 60 minutes and consists of three parts:

  • Part A: This section contains short texts such as emails, memos, and notices. The texts are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information provided in the texts.
  • Part B: This section contains longer texts such as case notes, discharge summaries, and journal articles. The texts are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information provided in the texts.
  • Part C: This section also contains longer texts such as case notes, discharge summaries, and journal articles. The texts are related to healthcare, and the candidate is required to match the headings to the paragraphs of the texts.

The reading sub-test is intended to evaluate the candidate’s ability to understand and interpret written texts in a professional context. The texts are chosen to reflect the type of texts that healthcare professionals would encounter in their daily work.

 

The OET Listening sub-test is designed to assess the listening skills of healthcare professionals in the English language. The test takes approximately 45 minutes and consists of four parts:

  • Part A: This section contains short dialogues or monologues, such as consultations or phone messages. The recordings are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information provided in the recordings.
  • Part B: This section contains longer dialogues or monologues, such as ward rounds or meetings. The recordings are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information provided in the recordings.
  • Part C: This section also contains longer dialogues or monologues, such as consultations or case discussions. The recordings are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to fill in the blanks in a transcript of the recording.
  • Part D: This section also contains longer dialogues or monologues, such as consultations or case discussions. The recordings are related to healthcare and the candidate is required to match the headings to the paragraphs of the transcript.

The listening sub-test is intended to evaluate the candidate’s ability to understand and interpret spoken language in a professional context. The recordings are chosen to reflect the type of spoken language that healthcare professionals would encounter in their daily work.

The OET Speaking sub-test is designed to assess the speaking skills of healthcare professionals in the English language. The test takes approximately 20 minutes and consists of two parts:

  • Part A: This section is an individual task and the candidate is given a prompt card with a role-play situation and a set of bullet points to guide their response. The situation is related to healthcare and the candidate is required to speak for 2-3 minutes while addressing the bullet points provided.
  • Part B: This section is a paired task and the candidate is given a prompt card with a role-play situation and a set of bullet points to guide their response. The situation is related to healthcare and the candidate is required to speak for 3-4 minutes while addressing the bullet points provided and engage in a conversation with the interlocutor.

The speaking sub-test is intended to evaluate the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in spoken English in a professional context. The tasks are chosen to reflect the type of spoken language that healthcare professionals would encounter in their daily work, such as consulting with patients or discussing cases with colleagues.

 

The OET Writing sub-test is designed to assess the writing skills of healthcare professionals in the English language. The test takes 60 minutes and consists of one task:

  • Writing Task: The candidate is given a prompt card with a writing task related to healthcare. The task could be, for example, writing a referral letter to a colleague, a letter to a patient, or a discharge summary. The candidate is required to write a professional and accurate text of approximately 250 words within the time limit.

The writing sub-test is intended to evaluate the candidate’s ability to write in a professional and accurate manner, using appropriate language and style for the task at hand. The task is chosen to reflect the type of writing that healthcare professionals would encounter in their daily work, such as writing letters or reports. The candidate’s ability to use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and to organize and present information clearly and coherently is also evaluated.
