GRE Sections

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – GRE

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test required for admission to many graduate programs, especially in the U.S., Canada, and some European universities. It measures your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

Anyone applying to a graduate program, including master’s degrees, MBA programs, and some doctoral programs. Some schools also require the GRE for scholarships or graduate assistantships.

The GRE has three main sections:
Verbal Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning
Analytical Writing There may also be an unscored research or experimental section included in the test.

GRE scores range as follows:
Verbal: 130–170
Quantitative: 130–170
Writing: 0–6 A "good" score depends on the requirements of the program you're applying to. Competitive programs often look for scores above 160 in both Verbal and Quant, and a 4.5+ in Writing.

The GRE lasts approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes (as per the new format introduced in 2023), including all three sections.

You can take the GRE once every 21 days, up to 5 times in a rolling 12-month period, even if you cancel your scores.

GRE scores are valid for 5 years from your test date.
